Hair Loss
4 most common hair loss types
Androgenetic Alopecia (Pattern Baldness):
- Male Pattern Baldness: Typically characterized by a receding hairline and thinning at the crown, progressing to partial or complete baldness.
- Female Pattern Baldness: Generally involves overall thinning across the scalp, particularly at the crown, without a receding hairline
Traction Alopecia
- Caused by continuous pulling or tension on hair due to certain hairstyles, such as tight ponytails, braids, or extensions. If not addressed, it can lead to permanent hair loss due to damage to the hair follicles.
Telogen Effluvium
- This type involves temporary hair thinning over the scalp, triggered by a shift in the number of hair follicles in the growing (anagen) phase to the resting (telogen) phase. Common triggers include stress, illness, childbirth, surgery, or significant weight loss.
Alopecia Areata
- An autoimmune condition that causes sudden, patchy hair loss on the scalp or other parts of the body. It can sometimes progress to alopecia totalis (complete scalp hair loss) or alopecia universalis (complete body hair loss).

Genetics (Androgenetic Alopecia)
Hereditary hair loss is the most common cause, leading to pattern baldness in both men and women. It involves a genetic predisposition to hair thinning and loss. -
Hormonal Changes and Medical Conditions
Hormonal imbalances, such as those due to thyroid problems, pregnancy, menopause, or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can lead to hair loss. Medical conditions like alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder, also cause hair loss. -
Medications and Treatments
Certain medications, such as those used for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, and high blood pressure, can cause hair loss as a side effect. Treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy also lead to hair loss. -
Physical or Emotional Stress
Significant physical or emotional stress can trigger a type of hair loss called telogen effluvium, where hair shifts from the growing to the resting phase, leading to shedding. Events such as surgery, serious illness, or traumatic experiences can cause this condition.
